Humble Beginnings… |
|
|
|
Founded
in 1991 as a sole proprietorship by Sandra Wanduragala, SELYN started
its work with 15 women in the village of Wanduragala in Kurunegala
in the North Western Province of Sri Lanka. Joined shortly by her
brother, Hilary Wanduragala, SELYN now has over 700 beneficiaries.

Our Story |
|
|
|
The
tradition of the loom is one that has been passed on by generations
of Sri Lankans. Today the industry faces decline due to various
reasons ranging from the lack of skilled expertise, uncompetitive
market prices and lack of infrastructure and technology. However,
we at SELYN take on this challenge to revive our heritage in order
to extend its benefits to our rural women and men. We strive to
be socially responsible and aim to extend our greatest support to
improving the livelihood our members. |

Helping hands.. |
|
|
|
SELYN
is not alone in their mission. There are several organisations,
mostly Fair Trade organisations, which through their marketing efforts
help spread the message of SELYN across the globe. Self-help is
one of the main concepts behind SELYN’s philosophy and what
persuades SELYN to help and empower its artisans and members is
the idea of rewarding them for the hard work they have put in to
take SELYN to where they are today. |

While
browsing you will find a few examples of the achievements the women
and men of SELYN have experienced; it is a living story and a happy
one. Selyn has created a new concept in Sri Lanka; a concept where
along with the empowerment our women and men, we are creating the
path for the empowerment of their sons and daughters. Along with
the continued support of all those who are involved, SELYN continues
to live and her family continues to grow. |
